The Role of the Progeny
One of the most significant agents in the spread of Imam Hussainâs (a) cause in the popular conscience of the people was the role played by the Imamâs (a) family. They were able to bring his cause out as the truth that it was â a cause for Islam and reviving the tradition and principles of the Holy Prophet (s).
The immaculate members of the Progeny (a) did not live and die for the cause of Imam Hussain (a) because of an emotional familial attachment. They didnât spread this message so people could feel sorrow for them and extend their sense of empathy; on the contra, peopleâs connection to their tragedy came because it emanated truth, sacrifice, chivalry, principle, and honor. The Progeny (a) sacrificed everything they had for this cause and made sure that the whole nation knew of it because it was part and parcel to the survival of Islam.
The renaissance of Imam Hussain (a) was central to protecting the religion of Islam and reviving the principles it was founded on. The divine messages sent to us from above have always faced movements that wished to be rid of the religion of God. When these movements were unable to annihilate the faith, they tried to steer people away from it. This is clear from the numerous divine religions that passed and the travesties they faced. God says,
The Jews say, âEzra is the son of God,â and the Christians say, âChrist is the son of God.â That is an opinion that they mouth, imitating the opinions of the faithless of former times. May God assail them, where do they stray?! They have taken their scribes and their monks as lords besides God, and also Christ, Maryâs son; though they were commanded to worship only the One God, there is no god except Him; He is far too immaculate to have any partners that they ascribe [to Him]![132]
